Michigan Fails Public in Government Spending
by Press Release
The following information was released by the Michigan House of Representatives, the Republicans:
State Rep. Kim Meltzer today renewed her call for government transparency as reports showed Michigan lagging the nation in informing citizens of funding decisions.
A report issued by the Public Interest Research Group showed Michigan as one of 18 states to receive a failing grade in meeting the guidelines of Transparency 2.0.
"As taxpayers, we should have the right to know how and where our money is being spent," said Rep. Meltzer. "I will continue to be a champion for government transparency because taxpayers should expect no less from their elected officials. I've set a precedent for efficiency in my office, standing strong as a Lansing reformer, fighting to ensure that government spending is limited."
Meltzer noted that her transparency legislation has been awaiting a hearing for three and a half years, and is hopeful that it will become more than just a discussion item in this year's budget process.
Meltzer's legislative agenda on transparency includes House Bill 4043 to create a searchable database of all state expenditures, and HB 4609 to require the same transparency in public schools.
"Transparency is an issue that needs to be more than a political talking point, it needs to be a reality," Meltzer said. "Sunshine is the best antiseptic, and Michigan taxpayers would be better served if they had a clear and forthcoming idea where their tax dollars were going."
